Privacybeleid – NOVA Ride

Laatst bijgewerkt: 21 oktober 2026 · English below

Vragen over privacy? Mail naar novaalfatest@gmail.com.

Wijzigingen

Privacy Policy – NOVA Ride

Last updated: 21 October 2026

This policy covers the NOVA Ride app for iOS and Android: voice communication between motorcyclists. The app is in development and is tested through TestFlight and Android test builds. Not every test build has all features below; this policy describes the latest test builds.

In short

Stored on your phone

This stays on your device. If you delete the app, this data is deleted as well.

What nearby riders can see

While Visible to other riders or Proximity chat is on, the app broadcasts a NOVA signal over Bluetooth. NOVA users nearby can then see your rider name and your public key, so they can invite you. A ride by invitation only starts after both riders have accepted. You switch Proximity chat on yourself; the app then automatically connects with other NOVA riders it sees nearby over Bluetooth who are also riding. The Bluetooth signal then contains only an anonymous code (derived from your rider ID and a key that is new each time the app starts) and whether you are riding (yes/no), not your name, speed or location.

The first time you open the app, it asks whether you want to be visible. With visibility on, the NOVA signal stays active while the app is in the background. On an iPhone in the background, only other iPhones can see you.

Blocking. If you have blocked someone, your NOVA signal contains short, anonymous check codes, derived from the IDs of the riders you blocked plus a random value. This lets a blocked rider's phone recognise that it should not show you. No names or IDs can be read from them. A modified app on the blocked rider's phone could, however, infer that you have blocked them.

During a ride

Riders in a ride see each other's rider names and whether someone is talking. The app assigns the host role automatically; if the host leaves, another rider takes over. If someone starts a vote to remove a rider, the others see who started the vote and who it is about, and then the result. Votes are not stored. Muting and blocking happen on your own phone only.

The NOVA server

For Proximity chat and for voice over 4G/5G, the app uses a NOVA server. During testing this is a server run by the developer in the Netherlands, reachable through the private network Tailscale; later it will be a server in the European Union. The server:

Microphone and voice

The microphone is used only during an active ride and for the microphone test. Your voice is compressed and encrypted on your phone and sent to the other riders in the ride, directly or through the NOVA server. They can only play it live. Nothing is recorded or stored.

Location, speed and motion

The app uses GPS to determine your speed, so that Proximity chat only works while you are riding and a group ride can pause when you stop. The app also uses the motion sensors to help recognise whether you are riding a motorcycle (see below). Your speed, location and motion data stay on your phone and are not sent to the server or to anyone else. Location is only used during a ride, while Proximity chat is on, or while your phone is connected to CarPlay or Android Auto, including when the app is in the background. iOS and Android show this with a location icon.

Bluetooth devices and cars

NOVA is made for motorcyclists. The app therefore looks at the name of the audio device your phone is connected to, for example a helmet headset or a car. If it recognises a car, it will not start or accept a ride, and it pauses a ride in progress.

Motorcycle screens also use CarPlay and Android Auto. When your phone is connected to one of them, the app uses the motion sensors to check whether you are riding a motorcycle. If the app is unsure, it asks whether you are on a motorcycle, and conversations may be temporarily blocked. The device name, the data from this check and your answer stay on your phone and are not sent anywhere.

Other permissions

TestFlight and Tailscale

If you test through Apple TestFlight, Apple may share crash reports and any feedback you choose to send with the developer. This is covered by Apple's privacy policy. During testing you reach the NOVA server through Tailscale, a secure private network; for this you create your own Tailscale account and Tailscale's privacy policy applies. The final app will not need Tailscale.

Sharing

NOVA does not sell or share data with anyone. The NOVA server is run by the developer.

Your rights and contact

NOVA keeps no personal data about you outside your own phone; what the server needs is held briefly in its working memory only. Questions about privacy? Email novaalfatest@gmail.com.

Changes

When the app changes, for example with new features, we will update this policy and the date at the top.
